Psychological Testing and Psycho-educational Assessment

Parents, school personnel, physicians, lawyers, mental health professionals and government agencies often request a Psychological or Psycho-educational Assessment of a child, adolescent or adult. Comprehensive Psychological Assessments can be an integral part in determining:

  • Intellectual ability
  • Learning style
  • Learning disabilities
  • Academic achievement
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Assessing the impact of a work related or motor vehicle accident
  • Career exploration and vocational interests
  • Personality assessment
  • Evaluation for behavioral difficulties
  • Parental capacity
  • Access and custody
  • Parental attachment (foster and biological)

Assessment information can help to design interventions, which assist the individual in maximizing his or her potential. Breakthrough assessors rely on a "best practice" model of assessment and testing, incorporating the most current assessment techniques and testing materials to provide effective interventions based on assessment results. The formal assessment process typically includes:

  • Pre-assessment interview
  • Formal assessment session(s)
  • Preparation of a detailed assessment report
  • Post-assessment consultation session

Pre-assessment interview is used to gather background information and assist clients in understanding what will be involved in the assessment process. Following this visit, formal assessment is conducted. The length of testing session depends on the nature of the referral. Some problems, such as learning disabilities require more extensive evaluation than assessment for behavioral problems or ADHD.

Assessment of parental capacity and family functioning usually requires in-depth assessment of all family members. Standard practice is to provide a final report after the assessment process is completed. A post-consultation meeting is also held to share the findings in person. Recommendations are "user friendly" to parents, teachers, physicians, social workers, and lawyers. The purpose of the assessment report and post-assessment consultation is to help clients understand the results of the assessment and to plan for intervention.
