Mediation, Counseling and Therapy for Separation and Divorce
Couples that have separated can engage the services of a mediator who will provide counseling and therapy, and guide them through the process of mediation. The goal of mediation is for the parties to come to some mutual agreement regarding the issues resulting from the separation. The focus of mediation counseling sessions is to discuss and resolve issues such as: custody and access, joint assets, joint liabilities and the division of material goods. Issues such as these are the most common ones discussed during mediation; however, it is not uncommon to resolve other issues during the mediation process.
Mediation is a voluntary process and one that can be terminated by either party at anytime without notice. A mediation session is usually 1.5 hrs. in length and it takes several sessions to reach an agreement between the parties.
Mediation is an informal process and outside of the judicial system; however, the resulting document (the actual agreement between the parties) is often considered binding by both parties.
