Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): Traumatic Stress Therapy and Counseling
With increasing frequency, people are faced with situations that are of a stressful, traumatic nature. This is related to a number of societal factors. Examples of traumatic incidents include violence such as a robbery, sexual assault, physical assault, murder and suicide. Traumatic incidents also include natural disasters such as flooding and man-made disasters such as plane crashes or motor vehicle accidents.
The therapists at Breakthrough are experienced in Critical Incident Stress Management and have been involved with the aftermath of numerous critical incidents including the crash of Swiss Air Flight 111. Breakthrough has therapists who are certified in the Critical Incident Debriefing framework called the Mitchell Model. This is the universally accepted template that the Canadian and U.S. Governments require for debriefing their personnel after a crisis. It is guided by the notion that "we are normal people in an abnormal situation". The debriefing process helps individuals and groups incorporate the various aspects of the critical incident so that they can go on more easily with their daily lives.
If you or someone you know has gone through an extraordinary life event, and you are wondering if Critical Incident Stress Management would be helpful, please feel free to call and discuss the situation with a therapist at Breakthrough.
