Information for Parents who are Bringing Children for Therapy or Assessment

When your child is coming to Breakthrough for assessment or therapy, your therapist may wish to meet with you and your child together for part of the first session. Alternatively, the therapist may wish to meet with you alone while your child waits in our waiting room, or conduct the first session with only the parents in attendance.

When your child is coming for play therapy or Theraplay®, your therapist will spend a few minutes with you before or after each session. This time is often spent talking together about ways to deal with parenting dilemmas or checking in with you about how your child is doing at home. This portion of the session may last from 10-30 minutes.

If your child is coming for an assessment, you may be asked to attend the first session without your child. During the first assessment session, the assessor will interview you to gather background information for the assessment.

When you are with your therapist, your child will be expected to wait in our waiting room. We have a special play area in our waiting room, equipped with toys, puzzles, and books for children of all ages. We ask that your child remain in the play area. Many children are content to do so until their parent(s) finish meeting with the therapist. Some children, who are feeling anxious, may need support to remain in the play area.

If your child needs to use the washroom while you are with the therapist, you will be asked to leave the session to accompany your child. Client washrooms are located down the hall in the upstairs section of the mall. Before you leave each session, we ask that you help your child return toys and books to their containers.

We welcome you and your child to Breakthrough!
